Pixel pitch is one of the first numbers buyers see when shopping for LED screens. But most explanations stop short of what really matters. Here is what pixel pitch actually means, how it connects to the panels we carry, and why the right partner makes all the difference — anywhere in the U.S.
If you have ever tried to shop for an LED screen, you have almost certainly come across the term pixel pitch. It shows up on every spec sheet, every product listing, and every sales conversation. What is pixel pitch — and why does it matter?
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the center of one LED pixel and the center of the next one. The smaller that number, the more pixels you can pack into the same physical space — which means more detail, sharper images, and the ability to view the screen from closer distances without seeing the individual dots.
A 1.5mm pixel pitch means each pixel is spaced 1.5 millimeters from its neighbor. A 4mm pitch means that gap is wider, so the pixels are larger and fewer — which is fine for big screens viewed from a distance, but not ideal for close-range applications.
Think of it like print resolution. A newspaper photo and a magazine photo can both look fine — but only from the right distance. Hold the newspaper too close and it falls apart. The same logic applies to LED screens.
Smaller pitch = more pixels per area
A 0.93mm or 1.5mm pitch packs far more LEDs into the same panel size. That means sharper images, smoother gradients, and the ability to stand close without seeing the individual pixel grid.
Larger pitch = wider pixel spacing
A 3.9mm or 4mm pitch has fewer LEDs per panel. That is completely fine for large-format installs viewed from 10 feet or more — and usually offers a more budget-friendly entry point.
The viewing distance rule: how pixel pitch and space connect
There is a practical guideline that helps connect pixel pitch to the right environment. It is not a perfect formula — room shape, ambient light, and content all play a role — but it gives you a solid starting point.
The most common rule of thumb: multiply the pixel pitch in millimeters by 8 to get the approximate minimum comfortable viewing distance in feet. So a 2.6mm screen has a minimum comfortable distance of roughly 20 feet. A 4mm screen, around 32 feet.

- Choosing the smallest pitch you can afford "just to be safe." Finer pitch costs more per square foot and gives you nothing your audience can see if they sit 20 feet back. P2.6 looks identical to P1.5 at standard auditorium distance — the dollars vanish into invisible detail.
- Specifying pitch without measuring the closest viewing distance. Closest distance, not average distance, drives the decision. If even one row of seats sits within the minimum threshold for your pitch, you will see the pixel grid from there.
- Forgetting that brightness and contrast matter as much as pitch. A 600 NIT P1.5 panel in a sun-flooded lobby looks worse than a 6,000 NIT P4 outdoor panel in the same space. Pitch sharpens the image; brightness makes it readable.
- Treating "pixel pitch" and "4K-ready" as the same conversation. A wall's resolution is determined by its physical size and the chosen pitch, not by a marketing label. Always confirm native panel count × pixels-per-panel gives you the resolution your content actually needs.
- Ignoring the wall's physical size constraint. A P1.5 wall that needs to be 12 feet wide requires far more cabinets than a P3.9 wall the same width. More cabinets means more weight, more power, more cooling, and a bigger structural backing — costs that don't show up in the per-panel price.
- Skipping the content side of the equation. A P1.5 wall fed 720p video looks worse than a P2.6 wall fed native 4K. The pitch you specify should match the resolution of the content you actually plan to display.
